Gilbert Henry Marquardt III / Senior Vice President, Group Creative Director / McCann-Erickson New York
Blame it on Beef Bordelaise.
It was a short stint in menu-writing and proofreading that launched Gib's career in advertising. It was there that a desire to whet the appetite--whether for Beef Bordelaise, Motorola’s first flip phone, Intel’s first Duo-Core processor, Applebee’s 2 for 20 Special, a MasterCard, a Gateway laptop, a Dos Equis, or a piece of Stride Gum—was born.
At JWT/Chicago, Gib created compelling and award-winning work for clients as diverse as Kellogg’s, Premier Cruise Lines, 7-Eleven, Motorola, Sherwin-Williams, Oscar Mayer, and The Milk Board.
In 1995, Gib was recruited by incoming CCO Nina DiSesa, to play a key role in the creative renaissance of McCann-Erickson New York. His contributions were felt immediately, co-leading the pitch and procurement of Lucent Technologies, the research and equipment arm of AT&T. The work created by McCann not only built a respected global brand from day one, it launched the largest IPO in Wall Street history. And added to a staggering $285 million 12-month new business flurry for the agency
During his tenure at MENY, Gib has also created work for and guided blue-chip clients that include Salomon Smith Barney, Intel, Johnson & Johnson, Poland Spring, Waterman Pens, Burger King, Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Applebee’s, Dentyne, Rolling Rock, Gateway Computers, Exxon Mobil and MasterCard.
For 12 years he has been the guiding creative force behind United Way of America, a 125 year-old organization re-inventing itself and finding a voice in the digital age. Comprised of over 1800 discrete U.S. chapters, United Way is, for the first time in history, rocketing into global digital presence and uniting under a single, concise brand ID and theme: the Gib-penned Live United.
His awards include Effies, Andys, Clios, London International, New York and Chicago Film Festivals, and the Cannes Short List.
Originally from Chicago, Gib has called New York home for 18 years. He holds a B.A. from Denison University and is the father of two.
